Innovations

Innovations is a ground-breaking five-level General English series first published between 2000 and 2006.

Based on a language-rich, lexical / grammatical syllabus, Innovations starts from the kinds of natural conversations that learners want to have. It features more colloquial language than its successor Outcomes, is more firmly rooted in British English, and is more fundamentally geared towards improving students’ ability to speak and listen. Innovations was twice nominated for the British Council ELTON awards for innovation in materials design and retains a loyal following around the world.

Here are a couple of comments from contented users:

INNOVATIONS Upper-Intermediate

“This book is very suitable for foreign English learners at upper-intermediate level because there’re many idioms in it and you can always have chance to practise and revise them. Actually, I’ve used this series of books and I think I’ve made big progress, especially in speaking.”

INNOVATIONS Advanced

“The best book I’ve ever had! This is a really useful book, which helped me before my IELTS. I recommend this book to anyboby who is in advanced level and willing to do the IELTS exam :-)”

Outcomes

The first edition of Outcomes was published between January 2010 and June 2011. While it maintained some links with our first General English series Innovations, particularly in terms of its strong lexical input and focus on developing speaking, Outcomes is far more mainstream in its balance of skills and its largely traditional grammar syllabus.

Here are some videos outlining key aspects of the course.

Outcomes Second Edition

We have recently finished writing the fifth level of Outcomes second edition.

Writing a second edition has been a fantastic opportunity as it has enabled us to respond to ideas from users – and some of their complaints! Yes, let’s admit it, no book is perfect, and no writers have the ability to try out every single thing they write before their books are published, so things do go wrong. Sometimes things date a bit too. As writers who continue to teach, classroom experiences have also sometimes given us new ideas about conversations to teach and stories to tell. Finally,  there were  also some things that the publisher wanted, which in this case was no bad thing as it has involved working with some incredible National Geographic resources.

So the new edition has all the great focus on genuine communication and thorough language work of the first edition with these enhancements:

  • Amazing Nat Geo photos to open each unit with tasks to generate ideas and language.
  • Scripted videos to support conversation practice and Nat Geo videos to bring world content and authentic language into the classroom.
  • More student and teacher friendly guided discovery and support for grammar
  • Enhanced online vocabulary builder with search facility, exercises, personalised word lists, self-testing tool and concordancer.
  • Integrated pron syllabus, with examples of fast and slow speech.
  • A dedicated website.
